Fearless Guides eZine: Live Joyously in a Fear-based World.

Issue #11

If it isn't fun, don't do it!

How much of your time do you spend doing things that you don't truly enjoy? How many hours each day do you waste on unenjoyable activities? You may be thinking, well someone has to do the dishes, the laundry, mow the grass, etc. Well, yes – these things need to get done. But, if you are doing these tasks and not having fun – it's time to learn a new way.

What is that new way? Well, you can either get someone else to do the things you aren't enjoying or you can shift your perspective so that you begin to enjoy an activity for the first time. Let's look at both options:

First, spend a few minutes thinking about your daily and weekly routine. What chores or tasks would you pay someone else to do if you felt that you could afford it? What do you hate doing? Make a list of everything that you are currently doing that you do not enjoy or does not give you energy.

Option #1: Outsource

You may think that you cannot afford to pay someone to clean your house, mow your grass, do your bookkeeping or whatever that hated chore is in your life. Think again. You cannot afford NOT to hire someone if that activity is sucking your life energy out of you.

Why? Because we are energetic beings and we resonate at a certain frequency. My meditation teacher, Ron Rathbun, teaches that we have two frequencies at which we resonate. We have a spiritual vibration that is our highest vibration. And we have our physical vibration, that varies quite a lot depending upon what we are focusing upon. Our life's work is to match our physical vibration with our spiritual vibration.

When you are doing something that you hate, you lower your vibrational frequency. And in doing so, you begin to attract things and people and events into your life that match this frequency. So, as you are doing the laundry or dishes and hating every minute of it, you may be attracting sickness, poverty, a car accident or anything else that matches your low vibrational energy.

If you chose to pay someone else to do an activity for you, you will be instantly shifting your vibration into a higher frequency. Provided you hire someone with the following intentions: 1) you hire someone who enjoys the work. 2) you don't spend any time or energy thinking “I can't really afford this.

If you hire someone who hates cleaning or mowing as much as you do, then you are inviting low vibrational energy into your life. It may not be yours – but it still shows up. Believe me, there are people who enjoy cleaning. I have interviewed dozens of house cleaners and I found only one pair of women who love to clean. But they do love it and they do a great job. They charge more than average – but their excellent work and great energy and enthusiasm are well worth it.

Now, if I tell myself that I cannot afford to hire someone but I do it anyway, then I am canceling out any positive benefits of outsourcing a hated task. Because I will replace my negative vibrational thought of “I hate doing this” with “I don't have enough money”. Both are negative, low-vibration thoughts.

So, what can I do? Hire the most positive person you can and when any thoughts of lack or scarcity appear, replace them with the following affirmation: “Money flows easily and frequently into my life.”

Option #2: Shift Your Perspective

It may not be practical to hire someone to come into your house every day to do the dishes and clean the kitchen. This may become too intrusive or unmanageable. So, rather than trying to force an unwilling partner to help you, you may need to learn to enjoy doing the dishes. (If you have a willing partner, then by all means, accept the help and support joyously!)

Thich Nhat Hanh is a Tibetan Buddhist monk who has a great exercise for learning to do dishes joyously in his book, Miracle of Mindfulness . He says that if you can learn to do the dishes mindfully then you will experience the joy of every moment of your life. The key is to not rush through the dishes so that you can do something more enjoyable, but realize that every moment of your life is equally precious and relax into the enjoyment of each moment. One way to make this easier and to enhance this experience is to count your blessings. Realize how blessed you are to have dishes and running water and food to eat. If you can feel gratitude and stay present, almost any task can become pleasurable.

To increase your enjoyment of life, work on small daily shifts. When you find yourself engaged in a task you don't enjoy, then either outsource it or learn to do the task in mindful gratitude.

Go forth and prosper!,
