Issue #14Are You the Author of Your Life? Exploring Options for Learning Are You the Author of Your Life? Are you self-directing your life or taking directions from others? Do you invest your time rather than spend your time? Do you know how if feels to spring out of bed in the morning, loving your life and excited about the day ahead? What keeps lots of us from authoring our own lives are the "shoulds" that we carry around with us. These are judgements and opinions that we picked up from our parents, teachers, bosses, and other people who we see in positions of authority. Most of these shoulds conflict with our inner desires and higher purposes. We often feel bad when we don't do something we think we "should". We feel worse when we do something we think we should, but it is not aligned with our higher purpose. “It is easy in the world to live after the world's opinions; it is easy in solitude to live after your own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude” - Ralph Waldo Emerson To author your own life, you must learn to stay in tune with your own soul. How do you connect with your soul? Or your inner compass, heart, intuition - use whatever words feel good to you. To author your life, you need to be paying attention. Allow yourself to be present to every moment of your life. I meditate for 10 minutes twice a day and do body scans and body movement practices to stay in touch with the sensations in my body. In this way, I know what it feels like for me to be grounded, centered, peaceful. Then I notice when something disturbs my peace. Think of yourself as a pond of still water - shimmering in the sunlight like a piece of glass. When a thought or emotion breaks the water, pay attention to what is going on. Are you feeling fear, anxiety, anger, sadness? Welcome any emotion that you notice. Allow yourself to feel it. Then let it go. This week, notice when your
peace is disturbed and when you are operating from a place of "I
should". Breathe into the feelings, allow yourself to welcome the
feelings and then allow yourself to let them go. (I will focus on the
letting go process in my next newsletter.) Then, ask yourself what your
heart/soul/higher being wants. Ask yourself what will help your soul to
grow? What choice will make you expand and not contract? Trust yourself
as you author your life. I wear lots of hats.
Life coach, mother, wife, and strategy consultant. I recently took a
short break from these newsletters to work with So far, my husband and I have had one video conference with our Learning Consulant (think enlightened teacher with experience and compassion) and in our 45-minute chat I learned so much about myself and my "shoulds" about learning and schooling. I learned that it is far more important for my young daughter to develop passion around her interests than to perfect the techniques immediately. Sage loves decorating cakes. And I often get uptight while helping her, because I want all the writing to be legible and the flowers to look like flowers. What a fun buster I am. Why not just get all gooey and sticky and have a blast decorating cakes with my daughter? What is going to encourage her to pursue her intersts in life - having fun or doing it "right". I hear from so many parents that their children enter kindergarten excited, ready to learn, with a bright light sparkling in their eyes. After a few years of school, many of these children are shadows of their former selves. With SelfDesign, I am learning how to help my daughter author her own life and regaining the capacity to author my own - all of this in community with other SelfDesigning families and with the support of an amazing Learning Consultant.
