Ideas, Inspiration, and Practices for living joyously in a fear-based world.

Viewing Work from a Higher Dimension

I have been devouring two books by Eric Butterworth who was a Unity minister and great teacher, Discover the Power Within You and Spiritual Economics. I share some excerpts with you here:

"Make a new commitment to think of your work not as a place to make a living but as an opportunity to make a life. Think of yourself as a channel through which creative activities flow, and there is not limit."

"Have we really made a success of our lives unless we have expanded the awareness of ourselves in the process? IS success simply a corporate grade or should we consider it on the basis of growth that is taking place within the person?... Of course you can succeed in your work, you can reach the top and become the best, without limits. Just be certain that it comes out of the expanse of your inner growth and not at its expense."

"Remember, you may not be able to change or control the people around you, but you can determine the level of consciousness on which you meet them and react to them... You will come to know that no matter what happens in your world, you don't have to be afraid, you really do not need to worry or be anxious. You can determine your reaction and thus your course of action."

So much of what Eric Butterworth says speaks to me on a deep level and I incorporate a lot of his wisdom in my coaching. I highly recommend his books.

The Job Trap

I often wonder why so many people that I know suffer silently in jobs that don't make them love going to work every day. I have met enough people and coached enough clients through the career transition process that I know it is possible to create work you love and make good money doing it.

I spoke with an engineer yesterday who had combined his technical and mathematical skills with his spiritual beliefs and is now a consultant on Vedic architecture. Do they teach that in college? No way! Does his engineering background help him in this highly mathematical pursuit? Absolutely!

I love anthropologist Catherine Bateson's analogy of our life as a patchwork quilt. She says that we never know which piece of the quilt we are working on and sometimes feel quite lost. When we near the end of our lives, if we have been listening to our hearts and intuition, we will be amazed at the beauty of our life quilt and how all of the pieces miraculously fit together.

What piece of the quilt are you working on? Are you wildly happy? If not, it is time to reevaluate and move on.

You may have chosen this job to gain a particular skill or to overcome an emotional block (a tough boss or coworker helps you to learn detachment). But, stop being a martyr and get ready to move on.

I believe that the only failure in life is the failure to learn from mistakes and move on. If we chose a job and are not happy, then failure would be to keep banging our head on the same wall over and over again. If you have realistically assessed the situation and know that you have learned what you came here to learn from this experience, then it is time to move on.

If however, you are finding that the same situation has appeared again in your life in a slightly different form, then it is time for you to do some personal transformation work before you move on. Cure for Fear

This month's Cure for Fear is to create a vision of your next step that is so exciting and compelling that you need to move forward.

First, do something that makes you happy - take a walk, talk to a good friend, listen to some music. When you are feeling happy and optimistic then you can proceed with the following steps.

Step 1: Brainstorming

To choose your next adventure, start paying attention to what excites you in life. What gives you energy? What do you enjoy doing? Don't worry at this point whether it is practical or you can make any money. Let you imagination run wild. No limits.

Make a list of every idea that you have. Now sit with this list for a week or two. Look it over every day and see how each idea makes you feel. Check in with your body to see what it is telling you.

Step 2: Choose Your Top 3 Ideas

You have been reflecting upon your list of ideas for some time, now it is time to choose the three ideas that get you most excited. On a blank piece of paper, write down these three ideas.

Step 3: Decide Which Idea You Will Pursue First

To get unstuck, you need to take action. At this point, one of the worst things that you could do is to get stuck in analysis paralysis and never do anything. Your next step is to start down the path and see where it leads. Remember, you can always choose another idea from your list. You may even come up with a better idea as you learn more and meet people. Get into action mode!

To do this, I recommend a 12-step plan which I walk you through in my Self-Coaching Guide: Jump the Cube. Here it is briefly:

1) Set personal goals; 2) Choose your income streams; 3) Affirm your intentions daily; 4) Ten-page business plan; 5) One-page business plan; 6) Action plans; 7) Personal action plans; 8) Money plan; 9) Build your team (essential even if you work alone); 10) Build your prototype; 11) Test your prototype; 12) Keep it fresh.

If you follow these 3 steps, I guarantee that you will be moving toward a fun and prosperous future.

Go forth and prosper!,
