Ideas, Inspiration, and Practices for living joyously in a fear-based world.

True Prosperity

In my past, I have frequently confused true prosperity and material wealth and need to stay mindful of this important distinction on a regular basis. So, I thought it might be helpful to have a brief discussion of this topic.

Most of us have been raised to believe that if we have lots of money and stuff, then we are prosperous. Material wealth and prosperity are treated the same. But are they?

Actually, no. (Even though there are tons of "propserity programs" out there that focus almost exclusively on amassing material wealth.) So, what is the difference?

Money and material possesions live outside of you. They are fleeting and can come and go out of your life. If you are a truly prosperous being, you will see the comings and goings of money as part of the flow of energy in your life. You will feel prosperous no matter what your bank account balance is.

How is this possible? True prosperity is an understanding that all of your resources come from your source. And the divine source of prosperity is your ideas. You have unlimited ideas, creativity, and love.

You may remember when the dot.com bubble burst in the early nineties that there were some individuals on Wall Street who chose to jump out of their office windows because they associated loss of money with their personal loss of worth. Now, a truly prosperous individual can weather any financial storm and know that if her business goes south or the stock market plunges, the only thing between her and accumulation of wealth is another great idea. And ideas originate from your source.

So, if you are in debt, fearful of losing your money, hate paying bills, or live in constant fear of becoming desolute, then you need to focus on strengthening your connection to source.

Cure for Fear: Connect with the Source of Your Prosperity

What is the best way to connect with your source? Silence. You need to create space in your life for you to feel your connection with source. I use daily meditation to connect with my divine source. What is the purpose of meditation? To transcend the human part of yourself and connect with your divine part.

I recommend meditating 20 minutes in the morning and 20 minutes in the evening. There are lots of ways to meditate and different methods work for different people. I currently combine 3 different meditation techniques in my meditation practice: quiescence meditation, surya meditation, and use of a personalized mantra.

In my quiescence meditation practice, that was taught to me by Ron Rathbun, I spend five minutes cleaning out the garbage that my mind has accumulated since my last practice. I start by bringing my conscious awareness to the top of my head and slowly scanning through my brain to the level of my eyes. This takes about 2 minutes. Then, I drop my awareness to the place of inner stillness - which is near my heart - and let my awareness rest there for 3 minutes.

In my surya meditation practice, I focus gently upon my self. When my attention wanders, I effortlessly bring it back to the self. Nothing is forced. There is no intention in this meditation. I sit in a comfortable position and observe myself on three levels: physical, emotional, and spiritual.

In my mantra meditation, I use a mantra to help my mind detach. I combine this with the surya meditation and let the mantra come easily to me. I don't force it and often the mantra becomes an energy rather than a word.

There are thousands of ways to meditate. Find one that works for you. Try some out. There is no one right way to meditate.

Inspirations for May

Here are some ideas that help me to connect with my source:

“Have you had a time of financial stringency and cried out, "I need money"? It is a confusion of priorities. More importantly, you need faith. You need a flow of creativitiy. You need ideas. Actually, it could be said that your money needs you. As long as you have impressed on your money the thought of insufficiency, it will continue to misrepresent you in your time of need. But if you consciously imbue your money with the idea of abudance, it will begin to work for you in a positive way. Suddenly the seemingly little supply becomes dynamic seed money, giving rise to unbelievable increase.”

-- Eric Butterworth

“True prosperity is not something we create overnight. In fact, it is not a fixed goal, a place where we will finally arrive, or a certain state that we will someday achieve. It is an ongoing process of finding fulfillment that continues to unfold and deepen throughout our lives.”

-- Shakti Gawain

" You may have everything in the outside world, but it means nothing if your spirit feels devoid of love."

-- Ron Rathbun

Go forth and prosper!,
